Turkey Day? A day of giving Thanks

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Let’s take a quick look at what kinds of things really were on the menu for the First Thanksgiving feast. Well, for starters, the Pilgrims probably ate a lot of breads, fish and meats, but the meats most likely included deer, swans, ducks, cranes, and eagles. An interesting variety to be sure, but the lowly wild turkey would likely have been overlooked if fresh venison had been an offering on the table. Fish was a staple of the early settlers’ diet and given the ease of catching them there would have been an abundant supply on the menu.

Sweet potato and pumpkin pies, cranberry sauce, corn on the cob, popcorn, and savory gravies were also not a part of that First Thanksgiving meal. The original Indian corn was used for cornmeal and trying to steam and eat this corn would probably have given you a broken tooth, or some severe indigestion.

Cranberries do grow in the far northern regions of the US but you will not find juicy ripe berries available during late November. Succulent sweet potatoes had not even made the journey to American soil at this time so you can count them out. Pumpkins were a possibility, but you would not have found the kinds of pies and casseroles that now grace our Thanksgiving tables. Instead, there was most likely a pudding stew that had a bit of honey added for a sweetener.

The main thing to remember is that the meal was a way of giving thanks for what was available at the time. There was some good food to eat, and they were able to share what they had with family and friends. This is what Thanksgiving is all about, isn’t it?

Keep the Joy in Christmas

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

No matter what you may think of Santa, elves or reindeer you are likely preparing to start your Christmas shopping. With that thought many people find their blood pressure rising and anxiety setting in, but it does not have to be this way.

Gifts do not have to be super expensive to feel extravagant. Gift baskets are a wonderful way to show how much you care and share the spirit of the season without breaking the bank. You might think that the extent of gift baskets are the cheap ones you find at retail stores with a handful of bath beads and lotion, however you might be surprised to find there are baskets to suit nearly any taste.

Do you have a golf lover in your life that Santa needs to visit? Get them a snack gift basket full of their favorite things with a golf theme. Summer sausage, coffee mug, 12 ball spotters and a divot tool, plus endless goodies!

If you want to be, a real hit go with a gourmet Christmas gift basket Santa may want to keep for himself, chocolate decadence. This gift basket is filled with all things chocolate including turtles, cake and cookies. Anyone receiving this gift will think they are royalty.

The main thing to remember this Christmas is to keep it simple, stress free and enjoyable. Take in the sights and sounds of the holidays but leave the worry and stress behind you.

I Enjoy the Holidays

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

There is a decided nip in the air and we all know that it is almost that time again, you know Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year! The holidays are a wonderful time of year when family and friends come together to eat, drink and be merry. Of course, if they stayed around to clean up afterward it would be even better!

Despite the nay Sayers and bah humbuggers I enjoy the holidays immensely. The scents, sounds and beautiful decorations give you a feeling of cheer. Sadly too many people will find the upcoming dates to be anxiety and stress filled, take heart however if this is your usual Modus operandi there are a few things you can do to make this year the best round of holidays ever!

Family Gatherings

There is nothing better than having a house full of family and friends sitting around the dining table talking about all they are thankful for that is unless you are the one who supplied all the food! A dinner for 10 people or more can quickly become expensive, particularly when it comes to dessert! Besides trying to prepare all that food can give you a panic attack.

This year instead of creating a huge dinner all by your lonesome, have a potluck holiday dinner! Create a sample menu and then hand out note cards on what everyone should bring. You can choose or let each family member choose for themselves. Now you can relax and only worry about providing the main dish!

As for gifting you can find a gourmet Christmas gift basket and other online gift baskets to fit most budgets and if some one is a distance away the gift will arrive fresh.

HOLIDAY SWEETS AND TREATS

A New Look at that First Thanksgiving Feast

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Turkey Day is how many people refer to the Thanksgiving holiday. That is hardly surprising when you consider that turkeys are the featured guest at the majority of dinner tables across the country. Even a number of people in the vegetarian crowd will concoct a tofu “turkey” as the main course on their Thanksgiving Day menu. Of course, all this being said, the only turkeys that are  thankful on this big day are  the ones that are not sitting front and center on the dining room tables.

In fact, there are many people who would rather eat almost anything other than a turkey drumstick. Truth is fish were most likely the real star at that first Thanksgiving feast so many years ago. Sure, there might have been a turkey or two, but they would certainly not even have been close to those plump, succulent birds that are now being bought in grocery stores. It is a safe bet that Americans would be eating far fewer turkeys today if all of that prep work had to be done by the family cook as it was back during the 1600s.

Did you know that lobster and fresh crabmeat was so abundant that even the Pilgrims considered them to be an everyday food? That just goes to show how times and thinking change over the years. There are millions of people today who would gladly swap a dozen Tom Turkeys for just a few delicious lobsters, or some freshly steamed crab legs, if it were not for the fact that these ocean delicacies are so expensive.

The pilgrims could have at least brought some unique holiday gift baskets to the celebration.

Just kidding maybe they did,are you looking for a holiday gift basket idea? You can make your life a little simplier with online gift baskets.

Skyway Lady

With Halloween upon us, our minds begin to wander back to spooky tales we have heard or creepy encounters we have had.  For many in the Florida Tampa Bay Area, Halloween stirs up the stories that tell the tale of a young blonde women who was seen repeatedly, on the original Skyway bridge either in the middle of it as if she was about to jump or she would be hitchhiking from one side of the bridge to the other.

The stories of this young woman date back to the 1960’s and generally involved people just passing through town who were not familiar with the tales of the young ghost.  This spectacular bridge has always been a popular spot for those wishing to end their life so many believe that she was one of the many that succeeded in jumping off the bridge.

The tales of this ghostly angel place her either wearing an outfit with a tight t-shirt or a white cotton dress.  Some say they would spot this ghostly figure in the middle of the bridge as if she were getting ready to jump but what really makes peoples skin crawl are the tales of her hitchhiking at the one end of the bridge as people have actually stopped and gave her a ride.

On many occasions, people would stop and offer her a ride.  They say she was very upset and nervous when she would get in the vehicle as if she was very scared of something.  She would actually carry on complete conversations with the people who would pick her up.  She would tell them about the urgency of her need to get to the other side of the bridge but as they got closer to the middle of the bridge, she would become very agitated. It was then that most of the motorists would turn to her to try to comfort her only to find that she vanished into thin air.

Is this where she jumped?  Did someone kill her there?  No one will ever know for sure why the woman haunted the Skyway Bridge in Florida.  She hasn’t been seen since 1980 when the original bridge was replaced due to a horrifying accident.  Some say that she is still stuck on the old bridge that is now basically a “ghost” bridge but no one will ever know.

There are many ghost stories that come out when Halloween rolls around but for the most part, those stories involve ghost sightings, where as this tale actually involves physical contact with a ghostly presence.  Was she running from something or to something?  There are people that believe in ghosts and then there are those who think the ghost stories are just stories.  Try telling that to those who gave a ride to the Skyway Lady.

Looking for a holiday gift basket idea? Nothing spooky here! Unique gift baskets  for the holidays.

Holidays and Winter go hand in hand.

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Though many people do become more depressed in the winter than any other time of the year, the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas have a certain stir about them.  Winter is a beautiful time of year, which is why it is also so magical.  The white snow looks a little like sugar or glitter sparkling against the ground, reflecting the moon and blue-blackness of the night.  Snow blanketing the streets, buildings, and houses makes everything look clean and white.  The first snow of the season definitely makes everything “look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go.”  Winter is the perfect season for Christmas, as it is serene, peaceful, and pure.

With this change in seasons from fall to winter, you probably also start thinking about the ones you love a lot more.  It is a time to be with friends, families, and loved ones.  It is also a time of sharing, giving, and laughter.  Sure, there are presents to be had, but the best part of it is shopping for those you will give.  There’s nothing quite like the bustle of the winter shopping crowds, with the stores decorated for the season in glittering garland and sparkling lights.  Everywhere you look, there’s a smile on someone’s face. If you don’t have the time or physcially can’t go store shopping, need a holiday gift basket idea? online gift baskets are a sure way to find what you need.

The fairytale feeling of family ties in winter and the holiday season is incomparable to anything you’ve ever experienced.  However, once you all get together, the warmness may wear off after a while – everyone needs their own space and the holidays can infringe upon that in some cases.  But, lest we forget, the winter holidays are for family and they give us just the right dose.

Winter and the Holidays

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

It seems that weather can affect our mood and outlook on life.  Just think about how you wake up on a drab, gloomy, rainy day – probably a little down in the mouth, right?  Compare that feeling to when you wake up on a bright, crisp, sunny day – happy and ready to take on the world!  The subtle effect of the weather on your mood is apparent – a little cranky when it’s too hot, listless when it’s too cold, and the connections go on and on.

Well, the same can be said for the seasonal change around the holiday season as well.  When the weather changes from summer to fall, you probably start feeling more in the holiday mood.  Of course, there are other changes that also indicate that the holidays are coming soon.  The beginning of school days combined with the cooling of the weather is a great indication that autumn is upon us.  When autumn rolls around, you know that Halloween, followed by Thanksgiving, then Christmas is sure to follow.

The changing of seasons gets us thinking about the upcoming holidays, so it makes sense that the weather changes we experience affect our mood and help get us into the festive holiday spirit.  Once the days start getting shorter and the air is crisp, you know that the holidays are coming.  Lighting the fireplace and enjoying some hot cocoa or warm apple cider is reminiscent of your childhood and the excitement and electricity of the holiday season.  These cold days bring about a warm feel

It is also time to think of gifting, stretched for time online gift baskets are a short cut with out cutting out the thought itself. Looking for a holiday gift basket idea? Corporate holiday gift basket? Gourmet Christmas gift basket? We have unique holiday gift baskets, please take a look.
